A city TikToker who created a video accusing a company that had contracted her to advertise their product of failing to compensate her, has been charged with cyberbullying and harassment.

Jennifer Wambui Karanja, popularly known as Kairetu Jenny, is accused of publishing the video on June 29, in which she said the firm declined to pay her. Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Gerald Mutiso requested clarification, saying demanding payment is not considered an offence.

The company said Karanja had received all her payments through M-Pesa and provided statements.

According to the company’s director, Kennedy Wachira, they had entered into an oral agreement with Karanja in May. The terms were for her to serve as a brand ambassador and marketer. In return, she would get Sh4,000 for each video posted on her TikTok account.

Given her substantial online following, Karanja produced two videos promoting the company and shared them on her timeline. She received payment for these videos.

Karanja is claimed to have demanded a monthly salary from the company but she was reminded that the agreement was for her to be paid for every video posted on her platform.

She denied the charges, pleading with the court to have mercy on her since she had a defamation case against her in high court on the same issue.

She was released on a Sh100,000 bond. The case will be mentioned on September 6.
